Catching Up

A weekend or so ago, the kids and I were on our own since Tom had to work.  Sunday after church we had a quick lunch and headed to Lauritzen Gardens for their portion of UP’s Railroad Days.  I had heard of an entirely wooden track, complete with some of Omaha’s buildings made of twigs.  But our first stop was to ride the mini train.

I think the girls wanted to stay inside where it was cool, but I was determined to find that wooden track.  Into the gardens we went!

Brendan informed us that he was the conductor, and he instructed us all to stay behind him.  He became quite unruly if someone (Makayla) didn’t listen.

Since this was our main purpose for coming, we headed back to the car once we got our fill.  The girls were done looking immediately; Brendan could have stayed all day.  The only kid who didn’t complain about the heat or the walk was Brendan.  But maybe that’s because I carried him (uphill) all the way back to the car.

When Dad came home he showed up with a new pool for our backyard.  Everyone was so excited.

Until they felt how cold the water was.

Every one of them has enjoyed this pool and we’ve definitely gotten our money’s worth out of it.  At least until Brendan bit a hole in the top.  Now it doesn’t stay blown up like it should.

It took him a few days, but now he loves to go under.  However, if he falls (or gets pushed) under, he lets us know that he “drowned.”  Sound familiar, Adam?

We promised the girls a sleepover with their new friend.  Saturday morning I came downstairs to find this.

These two went for a bike ride and when they came home had warm monkey bread waiting for them.

Defy Gravity

Brendan has been asking for days if we can go bowling.  The base has free bowling during the week, which we decided we should take advantage of since DOD civilian furloughs started last week.  We got there and were told that whoever mans the bowling counter didn’t show up for work so bowling was a no-go.

And off to Defy Gravity we went….  Not free, but never a disappointment.

Saturday morning while Tom went to work, the rest of us had a very successful garage sale.  We closed up shop a little early because we had a birthday party to go to.

Four-Day Weekend

The day after the 4th, we headed to one of our favorite places in Omaha – the zoo.  The girls were thrilled.

We mainly went to check out the new dinosaur stuff.  We saw a dinosaur 3D movie and then went to check out the big stuff.

This is where my camera died, so no pictures of dinosaurs.

At home, after naps, Dad got out the slip & slide.

I’m not sure which of the three had the most fun.

Every chance they get, they join the neighbors in their pool.

Saturday and Sunday the kids and I were on our own.  Since the base library closed due to budget cuts, we headed out to find our public library.  What a fiasco.  It’s been so long since I dealt with a public library that I had no idea you had to prove your residency before they let you sign up.  It took us two days and three trips to two different libraries to finally get some books.

Then we returned a couple nights later for pajama story time.

The Fourth…Only Two Weeks Late

DSC_0211-001On July 4th, we headed out to Mahoney State Park to spend the day.  First stop – a pony ride for the little guy.

Next stop – the water park.

He did not like the yellow bucket.  See below.  I was actually afraid there would be a nightmare about it because even after we were back home he kept asking me about that mean bucket.

The girls went paddle boating while we kept this guy safe on dry land.  Murky brown water that we can’t see to the bottom of makes us incredibly nervous.

After a quick dinner at Cracker Barrel, we headed home to do some sparklers.  Brendan skipped his nap and still stayed up until almost ten for fireworks.  He didn’t like the loud ones.  He was asleep the second his head hit his pillow.

Practice

We got some sparklers and poppers in preparation for July Fourth.  Nanny liked the poppers as much as Brendan did.

Action Packed

This past weekend was full of fun stuff to do.  Plus, Grandma came to town.  Friday night after a (really) long dinner out, we went to a free outdoor concert.

This guy had a great time and was furious with me when I made him leave at 8 to go home and get ready for bed.

The next morning Tom and I were trying to figure out what to do when we realized it was the very end of strawberry picking at our local berry farm.  And off we went.

He filled his little belly up with these berries.  They were really tiny but still tasted good.

This kid LOVES to cook and I had promised her that we could make Oreo truffles while Brendan took his nap.  FYI – don’t make the recipe off of the Kraft website.  Terrible.

He woke up before we finished and since he loves to help in the kitchen too, it was hard to make him understand that this was her project.  Licking this beater, and then the bowl, seemed to do the trick.

After naps on Sunday we found ourselves at the go kart track/arcade.  I’m not sure how that happened.

Although you can’t tell by the look on Tom’s face, this was not really a “race track.”  More of a “just drive around for fun” track.

Fun weekend but I was so exhausted by the end I think I was ready to go back to work!
